A.C. Baantjer (1923-2010) was a Dutch author renowned for his Inspector DeKok detective series. Before becoming a novelist, he served nearly four decades as an inspector with the Amsterdam Police. Baantjer also contributed to Dutch literature with other fiction and non-fiction works, and wrote a daily newspaper column in the Netherlands.

In "DeKok and the Sorrowing Tomcat," the fourth installment of A.C. Baantjer's Inspector DeKok series, a jogger discovers the body of Peter "Cunning" Pete Geffel on the Dutch sand dunes, a dagger in his back. Homicide Detective DeKok, who knew the victim, takes on the case with his partner Vledder. As they investigate in Amsterdam, another corpse surfaces, linking Cunning Pete's murder to a killing in higher social circles. DeKok and Vledder delve deeper, uncovering connections and seeking justice.
