Carlos Delacruz, a unique agent of the New York Council of the Dead, is an inbetweener—partially resurrected with no memory of his past life or death. When he discovers other inbetweeners, including a sorcerer who has unleashed ngks—implike creatures that destroy spirits—Carlos must stop them before they disrupt the balance between the living and the dead. As the ngks spread through the city, Carlos races to prevent the sorcerer from opening the entrada to the Underworld. In doing so, he uncovers the truth about his own existence.
