Gene Stratton-Porter (1863-1924) was an American author, wildlife photographer, and amateur naturalist. She set her novels in the central Indiana wetlands and swamps, which she also photographed. Stratton-Porter was a pioneer as one of the first women to establish a movie studio and production company.

Laddie, by Gene Stratton-Porter, is inspired by her own life and follows the youngest of eleven siblings, known as "little sister." Initially unwanted, she finds solace in nature and struggles with loneliness and studies. Her closest bond is with her beloved brother, Laddie. Through a poignant and humorous narrative, little sister shares her journey of growth and familial love.
