James Runcie is an English author known for his Grantchester Mysteries series, as well as a documentary filmmaker, TV producer, and playwright. He earned a first-class degree in English from Cambridge University and has produced arts, music, and history programs for the BBC. Runcie is the son of former Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie.

In James Runcie's "The Discovery of Chocolate," Diego de Godoy journeys to South America in 1518 with Cortes and falls in love with Ignacia, a native woman who introduces him to chocolate. Their affair ends tragically during the conquest of Mexico, but Ignacia secretly adds the elixir of life to Diego's chocolate, granting him immortality. Unable to die, Diego traverses history from Paris during the Revolution to Hershey, Pennsylvania, always accompanied by his greyhound, Pedro. Throughout his immortal life, Diego seeks to recapture the magic of Ignacia's chocolate and learn to embrace life fully.
