Jane Smiley

Jane Smiley, born in Los Angeles and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, earned her BA from Vassar College in 1971. After traveling in Europe, she pursued graduate studies at the University of Iowa, obtaining an MFA and a Ph.D. From 1981 to 1996, she taught at Iowa State University in Ames. Smiley resides in California with her family and numerous pets.

Early Warning, the second book in Jane Smiley's Last Hundred Years: A Family series, follows the Langdon family as they reunite for a funeral in 1953. As the years progress, each family member's life undergoes significant changes. Eldest son Frank becomes distracted by a past acquaintance, neglecting his troubled wife. Daughter Lillian watches helplessly as her husband Arthur is consumed by guilt over his secret government work. Daughter Clair discovers that marriage differs from her expectations. Amidst personal struggles and the looming shadow of the Vietnam War, the Langdons navigate love, life, and hardship.
