John Dunning is an American author known for his detective fiction, particularly the Cliff Janeway series, and for his reference books on old-time radio. Before dedicating himself to writing in 1970, he worked as a stablehand at a horseracing track and later at The Denver Post. After a hiatus from 1981 to focus on running a used book store, he resumed his writing career following encouragement from fellow authors.
