8 Series

Lindsey Davis is an English author renowned for her historical mystery novels, particularly the Marcus Didius Falco series and its spin-offs. She holds a degree in English literature from Oxford University and worked in civil service for 13 years. Her career as a full-time writer began after her romance novel was a runner-up for the 1985 Georgette Heyer Historical Novel Prize.

In Lindsey Davis's "A Cruel Fate," set during the English Civil War, bookseller Martin Watts and Jane Afton's brother Nat are captured by Royalists and held as prisoners of war in Oxford Castle. They endure severe mistreatment, including beatings, torture, and starvation, at the hands of the jailor William Smith. The central question of the narrative is whether Jane can rescue her brother before his physical condition deteriorates fatally.
