Mario Puzo (1920-1999) was an American author and screenwriter renowned for his Mafia-themed crime fiction, most notably "The Godfather." Drawing inspiration from his Italian immigrant family's life in Hell's Kitchen, Puzo wrote "The Godfather" with the goal of commercial success, which he achieved both in novel form and through its adaptation into a classic film with Francis Ford Coppola. Puzo passed away from heart failure in 1999.
