Robert Van Gulik (1910-1967) was a Dutch author renowned for his historical mystery series, the Judge Dee Mysteries. He earned a PhD in linguistics from Leiden University in 1935 and later served as a linguist in the Dutch Foreign Service. At the time of his death, Van Gulik was the Dutch ambassador to Japan.

Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee, originally published in Chinese as Dee Goong An by an unknown author, was translated by Robert Van Gulik. The novel follows the renowned Judge Dee as he solves three complex cases simultaneously. These include a brutal murder in a locked room, the mysterious death of a bride on her wedding night, and a series of thefts involving a notorious gang.
