Stella Rimington, a British author, writes the Liz Carlyle spy thriller series. She was the first female Director-General of MI5, serving from 1992 to 1996. Prior to this, she worked in the Security Service since 1965, covering areas such as counter-subversion, counter-espionage, and counter-terrorism.

Stella Rimington's "Open Secret" is the autobiography of the first female Director-General of MI5. She began her career with MI5 in 1965 part-time while in New Delhi, later transitioning to a full-time role upon returning to the UK. Rimington worked in all three branches of MI5, eventually leading each one. In 1992, she was appointed Director-General, becoming the first woman and the first publicly named holder of the position. During her tenure, she advocated for greater transparency within the organization.
