Thomas Pynchon, an American author, is known for his dense literary style influenced by Herman Melville, Vladimir Nabokov, Franz Kafka, and William Faulkner. A MacArthur Fellow and National Book Award winner, he has been frequently considered for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Pynchon, who grew up in Long Island, New York, served in the U.S. Navy and earned an English degree from Cornell University.
