Thorne Smith (1892-1934) was an American author known for his comic fantasy novels, which often featured themes of sex, drinking, and supernatural transformations. Born in Annapolis, Maryland, he attended Dartmouth College and later worked as a part-time advertising agent. His creation of the Topper character marked a significant achievement, bringing him considerable success in his literary career.

In Thorne Smith's "Turnabout," a married couple experiences a bizarre twist of fate when an Egyptian idol causes them to swap bodies. This humorous novel explores the ensuing chaos and insights gained from living in each other's shoes. The story's unique premise later inspired adaptations into a film, a sitcom, and notably, the final episode of Star Trek: The Original Series.
