William Ritter is a New York Times bestselling author of YA historical fantasy/mystery novels. He is best known for the Jackaby series, which the Chicago Tribune described as a mix of Sherlock Holmes and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Ritter resides in Oregon and is also an educator, husband, and father.

In "Jackaby" by William Ritter, set in New Fiddleham, New England in 1892, newcomer Abigail Rook joins the unconventional investigator R.F. Jackaby as his assistant. Jackaby, who can see supernatural beings, enlists Abigail's keen eye for detail in his work. On her first day, they are thrust into a gripping case involving a serial killer. While the police believe the culprit is human, Jackaby is convinced a supernatural creature is responsible. Amidst the investigation, they encounter resistance from local authorities, except for the supportive detective Charlie Cane.
