In David Guterson's "Our Lady of the Forest," teenager Ann Holmes, a troubled runaway, experiences visions of the Virgin Mary while picking mushrooms in North Fork, Washington. As these apparitions continue, the struggling logging town transforms into a pilgrimage site for the faithful and desperate. Ann's deepening involvement blurs the lines between sanctity and insanity, drawing a diverse crowd to witness the potential miracle. The novel intricately weaves the extraordinary with the ordinary, exploring the impact of perceived divine intervention on a small community.
