Eva Ibbotson (1925-2010) was a British novelist known for her romance and children's/YA fantasy books, characterized by their humor and magical elements. Born in Vienna, Austria, she moved to England and studied at Bedford College, Cambridge University, and the University of Durham. Initially aspiring to be a physiologist, she transitioned to writing after a career in teaching and television, aiming to alleviate readers' fears of the supernatural through her imaginative characters.

Eva Ibbotson's novels often feature enchanting and mysterious elements. In "A Countess Below Stairs" (also known as "The Secret Countess"), a Russian countess works as a maid in England post-revolution. "Magic Flutes," alternatively titled "The Reluctant Heiress," follows an opera singer's journey to save her family's estate. "The Haunting of Hiram C. Hopgood," also published as "The Haunting of Hiram" and "The Haunting of Granite Falls," explores supernatural occurrences affecting a businessman. "Monster Mission," known also as "Island of the Aunts," involves three aunts and their unusual care for mythical creatures.
