Forrest Carter, the pen name of Asa Earl Carter (1925-1979), was an American author and political speechwriter. Under this pseudonym, he wrote the successful novel "The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales," which was adapted into the film "The Outlaw Josey Wales" directed by Clint Eastwood. Carter's true identity as a Southern Klansman was later revealed by The New York Times.
