Geraldine Brooks is an Australian-American author and journalist known for her historical fiction novels. Her novel "March" won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2005. She holds a Master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, earned after moving to the United States on a Greg Shackleton Memorial Scholarship.

In "Caleb's Crossing" by Geraldine Brooks, Bethia Mayfield, a young English Puritan in 1660s Martha's Vineyard, forms a secret bond with Caleb, the son of a Wampanoag chieftain. As their friendship deepens, Bethia's father, a Calvinist minister, seeks to convert the Wampanoag. Caleb becomes central to the clash between traditional and new ways, ultimately becoming Harvard College's first Native American graduate. Narrated by the compelling Bethia, the novel explores their pursuit of knowledge amidst a backdrop of superstition and cultural tension.
