John Vercher is an American author whose debut novel, Three-Fifths, was the first release on Agora's diversity-focused imprint, Polis Books. The novel was named one of the best books of the year by the Chicago Tribune. Prior to his debut, Vercher published fiction in Akashic Books’ flash fiction features, Mondays are Murder and Fri-SciFi.

In John Vercher's "Three-Fifths," Bobby, a biracial man passing for white, faces a crisis when his best friend is released from prison as a white supremacist. Raised by a bigoted grandfather, Bobby has concealed his true identity his entire life. The situation escalates when he witnesses his friend assault a young black man with a brick, prompting Bobby to help hide the crime to protect his secret. As Bobby struggles to maintain his façade, the return of his estranged black father threatens to unravel his carefully constructed life.
