Olivia Manning (1911-1980) was an Anglo-Irish author known for her novels that explored personal journeys, often set in England, Ireland, and the Middle East, drawing on her own experiences. She gained posthumous fame when her Balkan and Levant trilogies were adapted into the television series "Fortunes of War" in 1987. Manning's travels with her husband, British Council lecturer R.D. Smith, to Romania, Greece, Egypt, and Palestine enriched her writing.

In Olivia Manning's standalone novel, "The Rain Forest," married writers Hugh and Kristy Foster journey to the secluded island of Al-Bustan in the Indian Ocean. Upon arrival, they uncover the island's undercurrents of unrest and intrigue. As these tensions escalate, the differences between Hugh and Kristy are illuminated, challenging their relationship. The novel explores themes of isolation, conflict, and the dynamics of marriage against a backdrop of exotic danger.
