In Patrick deWitt's debut novel, "Ablutions," a nameless bartender at a decaying Hollywood bar observes and records the lives of his patrons, initially finding their descent into nightly oblivion both amusing and pitiable. As he forms tentative friendships to uncover their secrets, he also spirals into addiction, consuming pills and Jameson's. His personal life deteriorates further when his wife leaves him, prompting a series of random sexual encounters and increasing self-destructive behavior. Trapped by his own vices and indecision, he resorts to irrational violence. In a desperate attempt to save his soul, he seeks to escape his downward spiral.
