Pearl S. Buck (1892–1973) was an American author known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Good Earth, and her Nobel Prize in Literature in 1938, making her the first American woman to receive this honor. Born to missionary parents, she spent much of her life in China, which inspired the settings of her literary works. Buck also founded Welcome House, the first international/interracial adoption agency, and was an advocate for civil and women's rights.

In "East Wind: West Wind," Pearl S. Buck explores the journey of Kwei-lan, a traditional Chinese girl married to a doctor educated abroad. As Kwei-lan navigates her marriage, she encounters Western perspectives that challenge her beliefs. This coming-of-age tale follows her transformation and self-discovery as she reconciles these new ideas with her cultural roots.
