
Pearl S. Buck

Buck (1892–1973) was an American author known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Good Earth, and her Nobel Prize in Literature in 1938, making her the first American woman to receive this honor. Born to missionary parents, she spent much of her life in China, which inspired the settings of her literary works. Buck also founded Welcome House, the first international/interracial adoption agency, and was an advocate for civil and women's rights.
