Peter Heller's *The River*, nominated for the 2020 Edgar Allan Poe Award, follows two college students on a wilderness canoe trip. Their journey becomes urgent when they spot a wildfire. After hearing a couple arguing on the riverbank, they fail to locate them. The next day, they see only the man, raising questions about the woman's whereabouts. As they struggle to survive, the mystery deepens.
