R.D. Wingfield (1928-2007) was an English author and playwright, renowned for his Detective Inspector Jack Frost crime fiction series. Born in Hackney, Greater London, he left his job at Petrofina to become a full-time writer after crafting three radioplays for the BBC.

In "Frost at Christmas," the first book in R.D. Wingfield's Detective Inspector Jack Frost series, ten days before Christmas, young Tracey Uphill disappears after Sunday school. Her mother, a prostitute, seeks help from Detective Inspector Jack Frost, who is assigned the Chief Constable's nephew, Detective Constable Clive Barnard, as his partner. Frost, known for his biting humor, often targets Barnard with tasteless anecdotes. The investigation leads Frost to consult a local witch, which results in the discovery of a skeleton and plunges him into a dangerous cold case. As Frost delves deeper, he risks both his career and his life.
