Sarah Waters is a British novelist known for her historical fiction. She holds a PhD in English Literature and has taught at the Open University. Waters has received numerous accolades, including the Betty Trask Award, Somerset Maugham Award, and Waterstones Author of the Year Award. Several of her novels have been adapted for television by the BBC and ITV.

In Sarah Waters' standalone novel "Affinity," Margaret Prior, an upper-class woman recovering from a suicide attempt, begins visiting the women's ward of Millbank prison as part of her charity work. There, she becomes fascinated by Selina Dawes, an enigmatic spiritualist inmate imprisoned after a seance went awry, resulting in an elderly matron's death. Initially skeptical, Margaret is drawn into Selina's world of ghosts and spirits. As their relationship deepens, Margaret devises a plan to secure Selina's freedom, seeking her own liberation in the process.
