Steven Pressfield is an American author known for his historical fiction and non-fiction books, as well as his work as a screenwriter. A Duke University graduate, he served in the United States Marines before embarking on a diverse career that included roles such as copywriter, teacher, and truck driver. Pressfield co-founded the publishing house Black Irish Books with agent Shawn Coyne.

In Steven Pressfield's "The Legend of Bagger Vance," set during the Great Depression, golf legends Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen compete in a 36-hole match on Krewe Island, joined by a third player, a troubled war veteran and former golf champion. This third golfer is guided by his caddie and mentor, Bagger Vance, who possesses knowledge of the secret of the Authentic Swing. Bagger aims to help his protégé rediscover his winning form. The novel inspired a film adaptation directed by Robert Redford, featuring Will Smith, Matt Damon, and Charlize Theron.
