David Nicholls is a British author and screenwriter who graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in English Literature and Drama. After initial acting roles with the Royal National Theatre and BBC Radio Drama, he transitioned to scriptwriting, notably creating the sitcom "Waiting" and adapting the stageplay "Simpatico" into a feature film. Nicholls has since focused on writing full-time.

In David Nicholls' "Starter for Ten," set in 1985, Brian Jackson, a working-class university student on scholarship, pursues his dream of competing on the popular British quiz show University Challenge. After securing a spot on his school's team and passing the qualifying rounds, Brian prepares for their first televised match. Amidst this, he develops feelings for his intelligent teammate, Alice Harbinson. As Brian's world expands, he discovers that a little knowledge can be perilous, challenging his path to victory.
