Fred Aceves is an American author of YA novels, born to a Mexican father and a Dominican mother in New York. He has lived in Southern California, Florida, Chicago, New York, the Czech Republic, France, Argentina, Bolivia, and Mexico. Aceves has also worked as a delivery driver, server, cook, car salesman, freelance editor, and English as a second language teacher.

In "The Closest I've Come," Fred Aceves introduces Marcos Rivas, a teenager yearning for love and a better life. Marcos desires to escape Maesta, his troubled neighborhood, and distance himself from his indifferent mother and her abusive boyfriend. His aspirations include owning a working cell phone and a decent pair of sneakers. Marcos faces the daunting challenge of breaking free from his circumstances, making his dream of leaving Maesta seem nearly impossible.
