Harry Kemelman (1908-1996) was an American author known for his Rabbi Small mystery series. Born in Boston, he held a B.A. in English Literature from Boston University and an M.A. in English philology from Harvard. Before becoming a full-time writer, Kemelman taught English and worked as a wage administrator during World War II.

In "Friday the Rabbi Slept Late," the first book in Harry Kemelman's series, Rabbi David Small leads the Jewish community in Barnard's Crossing. His Sabbath is disrupted when a young nanny is found dead in the temple's parking lot, with evidence pointing to him. Rabbi Small must clear his name to restore his reputation and continue his leadership.
