2 Series

Jeannette Walls is an American author and journalist, known for her New York Times bestselling works in both fiction and non-fiction. She graduated with honors from Barnard College in 1984 and previously worked as a gossip columnist for MSNBC.com. Walls resides on a 205-acre farm in Virginia with her husband, John J. Taylor, and her mother.

In Jeannette Walls' novel "The Silver Star," set in 1970, sisters Bean and Liz Holladay, aged twelve and fifteen, are left to fend for themselves when their mother departs to find herself. The sisters relocate to Virginia to live with their Uncle Tinsley in a dilapidated family mansion. As they struggle financially, they take up babysitting and office work for the domineering mill foreman, Jerry Maddox. While Bean adapts well to their new life, Liz becomes increasingly withdrawn, culminating in a disturbing incident involving Maddox. Through their challenges, Bean uncovers the identity of their father and the reasons behind their mother's departure from Virginia.
