In Kent Haruf's standalone novel "Where You Once Belonged," Jack Burdette, the prodigal son of Holt, Colorado, returns to town in a red Cadillac. His arrival does not go unnoticed for long; Ralph Bird of the Men's Store spots him and quickly alerts the sheriff. Jack's return is met with unease, as he is far from welcome in the community he left behind.
