Before his writing career, Shaara worked as a police officer and taught literature at Florida State University. He is the father of novelists Jeff Shaara and Lila Shaara, and posthumously honored through the Michael Shaara Award for Excellence in Civil War Fiction, established by Jeff Shaara and awarded annually at Gettysburg College.
