American Pastoral, the first in Philip Roth's American trilogy, follows Seymour "Swede" Levov, a hardworking man who inherits his father's Newark glove factory. Set during the turbulent 1960s, the novel traces Swede's rise and dramatic fall. Despite his private nature and good intentions, Swede's life unravels as he becomes entangled in the era's historical upheavals.
