Susan Choi is an American novelist whose debut novel, "The Foreign Student" (1998), won the Asian American Literary Award for Fiction and was a finalist for the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award. She has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award. Choi also received the PEN/W.G. Sebald Award for her novel "A Person of Interest."

In Susan Choi's "Trust Exercise," set in a competitive performing arts high school in an American suburb during the 1980s, students David and Sarah fall in love. Their relationship becomes the talk of their tight-knit school community. The school serves as a protective bubble, shielding them from external issues—until it no longer can. As outside problems penetrate their sanctuary, the students face new challenges that test their bonds and beliefs.
