Yuri Rytkheu
2 SeriesYuri Rytkheu (1930-2008), a Chukchi author, is considered the father of Chukchi literature for his novels written in both Chukchi and Russian. He studied at Leningrad State University and gained recognition through publications in periodicals. After the Soviet Union's collapse, his works were no longer published in former Soviet states due to his Communist Party membership, but Swiss publisher Unionsverlag introduced his literature to Europe and Asia.
In "A Dream in Polar Fog," Yuri Rytkheu tells the story of John MacLennan, a Canadian sailor stranded in northeastern Siberia after being left behind by his ship. Adopted by a Chukchi community, John learns to live among them, gradually understanding their humanity and shared traits with his own people. As he integrates into their society, tragedy tests the bonds formed, but compassion and honesty help mend the wounds. Tensions ebb and flow, illustrating the depth of human connection across cultures.
