In Jason Reynolds's "When I Was the Greatest," Ali, a teenager from Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, navigates life away from the neighborhood's prevalent guns and drugs, focusing on school, boxing, and family. His best friend Noodles, however, constantly seeks trouble, drawing Ali into his messes.
