William Diehl was an American novelist, journalist, and photographer. His debut novel, "Sharky's Machine" (1974), was adapted into a major motion picture starring Burt Reynolds. Diehl is also known for his Martin Vail series of books.

In William Diehl's debut novel, "Sharky's Machine," Detective Sharky is demoted to the vice squad after shooting a drug dealer on a crowded bus. While working in vice, he uncovers a blackmail scheme run by a high-priced call girl and her pimp. As Sharky plans a sting operation, he unexpectedly falls for the call girl, Domino, complicating his mission. The investigation leads him into a dangerous conspiracy involving a presidential candidate, his wealthy backer, and a ruthless assassin hired to erase their past misdeeds. Sharky must navigate this perilous web to bring the criminals to justice.
